Play A Different Note
I have mentioned before that the human body prefers homeostasis. The body will always strive to get back to a state of balance, because this is where the systems of the body are most efficient. Efficiency means the body doesn’t have too work too hard. So, what does this have to do with your workouts? A lot of times, we will go to the gym or where ever it is that we workout and perform the same routine week in and week out. Sure, we might occasionally switch an exercise, but that is about it. Usually, the resistance training is done first, followed by some form of cardio. Many training programs look something like this:
MONDAY: BACK
TUESDAY: CHEST
WEDNESDAY: LEGS
THURSDAY: SHOULDERS
FRIDAY: ARMS
FOLLOWED BY WALKING FOR 25 MINUTES.
Well, this does two things. First, you don’t see any results after the body has adapted to this, which usually only takes 2-4 weeks (even shorter if you have been training for a while). Secondly, and
more importantly in my opinion, you stop enjoying your workouts. Your workouts should be a time of pleasure for you, a great investment in your temple.Imagination can go a long way in designing a fun and effective workout. Think about this for a moment: there are only 7 notes in the world of music, yet the types and forms of music are infinite, from hip-hop to classical. To apply this to the exercise world, there are over 70 different variations of the squat! How many have you done? You can take any movement and perform it in a different plane (there are three: sagittal, frontal and transverse). Think of the lunge, you could do a front lunge, reverse, lateral, diagonal reaching lunge. There are millions of combinations of movements and sequencing you can do with your exercises. Have fun with your workouts and keep track of what works and what doesn’t. An exercise program is only effective as long as the time it takes your body to get used to it. Strike a different note, play a different brand of music!
Your body will thank you.
