Self-Talk and Weight Loss - Women
Self Talk and Weight Loss
think one of the most important things to look at when you decide that you want to lose weight is; How do you talk to yourself. If you are using self defeating language when you talk to yourself then you run a high risk of failing on any weight loss program you decide to start. Here are a couple of exercises designed to help you become aware of how you talk to yourself
1. This might sound silly but trust me. Wear a shirt with pockets. (only for 1 day) put a bunch of toothpicks in the right pocket. Every time you say something negative to yourself or question yourself move a toothpick from the right pocket to the left. See how many you have a the end of the day. You may be surprised at how often you say mean things to yourself. Remember, these are only the ones you were aware of, there may be many more going on under the surface. So, even if you don’t wear the shirt, become more and more aware every day of the things you say to yourself a
nd start shifting them to more positive statements.2. Think about a past experience that you labeled a failure. How did you handle it? Were you mad at yourself? What are the words that you use when you talk to yourself about it, even now? What kinds of feelings come up when you think about it now? Notice if you speak to yourself in negative terms about the situation. If you do then take a step back. Can you think of things that you learned from that experience that will help you this time around. What are some of the positive things that you learned about yourself and others that you use to aid your success this time. If it is hard for you to think of positives, I suggest that you really take some time to seek them out, they are there. It is important to do this before you start a new journey because unfortunately you will slip up and if you have some positive messages ready you can pull them out and lift yourself up instead of putting yourself down.
3. This will assist you in beginning to talk to yourself in a way that will lead to success. Find a part of your body that you like, what ever it is, find one. Spend one minute a day thanking that part of your body for all that it does for you. It could be that you thank your hear for beating all day long, or your feet for standing strong throughout the day. Do this every day until you truly appreciate this part of your body and then move on to another part. This will build your self esteem and confidence and effect your life in ways you are not even expecting.
Remember to take things slowly and be kind to yourself. Enjoy the journey, it is the most important part
