Walking For Exercise And Mood Improvement

When it comes to exercise, many people make the mistake of thinking it’s all or nothing–that you either have to train for a triathlon, or be a complete couch potato. While this may lead to some folks getting in shape, it’s not a realistic approach for the majority of us. Many of the people who might otherwise be motivated to get fit, quit under the extreme strain of constant, too vigorous, workouts.

I used to believe that I would never get in shape. You see, my physically active friends are into jogging and weight lifting exercises. I have a bum knee, and to add insult to injury, I was severely overweight. I was under the impression that there was no help for me. Then I discovered walking for exercise.

Walking Is Good Exercise

As it turns out, walking is actually good exercise. Who’d of thought? Getting your exercise by walking is a low impact way to get your workout. Walking briskly has many of the benefits of jogging without the knee da

maging jarring. It elevates your heart rate–gets your blood pumping–and even helps to strengthen your legs. All this, without putting too much strain on your ankles and knees.

My friends that jog probably won’t be able to in 10 years from now. Their jogging could actually make it so that they can’t even walk at all. But I’ll be able to walk for exercise for the rest of my life.

Walking For Weight Loss

Few folks fully understand the possibilities of walking as a means to losing weight. They may think that, because walking is a more moderate exercise than jogging, they won’t be able to lose as much weight. While you may not be able to lose weight as quickly, most people can walk for longer, so walking for exercise can actually help you lose more weight in the long run. No pun intended

It’s not the intensity of the workout that determines how much weight you’ll lose, it’s how long it is. If you can elevate your heart rate for about sixty minutes by walking briskly, it will be more beneficial for you than 20 minutes of hard-core running.

To sum it up, the benefits of walking for exercise include:

* weight loss
* better cardiovascular health
* more flexibility
* and a better mood.

When you start walking on a regular basis, you’ll feel better than you have in a long time. In fact, with regular exercise, your moods will improve considerably. That’s why I go on a walk at least five days a week. I always feel much better after my walks. And feeling good about yourself is reason enough to walk for exercise. Isn’t it?
